Lankaa Achar(Green Chilli Pickle)

Ingredients:
Green chillies: 1 kg cut in 1/4 inch rounds
Ginger paste: 50gms
Shredded Ginger: 50gms
Chilli powder: 50gms
Garlic paste: 100gms
Turmeric powder: 30gms,
Mustard seeds: 60gms a tsp set aside and the rest ground to paste
Vinegar: 2 cups
Mustard oil: 3 cups
Non-Iodised salt to taste
Ordinary sea salt is a good preservative
Sugar: 2 tbsp
Method:
1. Add about a level tbsp of salt to the chillies, mix and set aside for a few hours or overnight.
2. Grind the masala paste with vinegar instead of water. Heat half the oil to smoking in a pan and fry the chillies in this for about 10 minutes.
3. Remove chillies to another dish. Add three- quaters of the remaining oil to the pan.
4. Allow this to become smoking hot. Add the teaspoon of mustard seed and when it stops spluttering, add the shredded ginger.
5. Fry for a minute and then add the other masala pastes, ginger and garlic. Fry for a good 10 minutes or more until the masalas change colour, then add the remaining vinegar and 2 tbsp of sugar.
6. Add the fried chillies to the masalas in the pan, fry for another ten minutes. Adjust seasoning.
Just before removing from fire, add the remaining oil and mix well. Cool and store in jars

Mirch ka Achaar (Instant Green Chilli Pickle)

Ingredients:
1 Cup chopped green chillies (medium hot variety)
3 tsp coarsely ground oriental mustard seeds
1 tsp coarsely ground methi (fenugreek) seeds
½ tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp salt
1/8-1/4 Cup refined peanut oil
Juice of 2 limes
Method:
In a bowl first place the ground mustard seeds. Top with ground
methi seeds. Place the turmeric powder to a side. Heat the oil in a pan
till very hot. Pour over the methi seeds; it will gradually soak the
mustard as it spreads (and cools).
Wash, pat dry, and chop the green chillies. Once the spices have
cooled, add the chopped chillies, salt and the lime juice. Mix. Store
in a clean dry jar. Let sit 24 hours before consuming.
The hot oil treatment of the spices is a very important step –
something I wasn’t aware of the first time I attempted this pickle. And
the mustard in the pickle was a heady experience after a couple of
days, if you know what I mean. The tempering partially cooks the spices
allowing for just a mellow sharpness, and stops the mustard from
developing into a full sensory onslaught.
Use the lower amount of oil specified if planning to refrigerate the
pickle and consume within a few weeks. Use the larger amount of oil if
you need longer shelf life. It does not need refrigeration.
This pickle is best made in small quantities to enjoy the chillies
in their crispier state. Serve with any Indian meal, burgers, hot dogs;
it perks up breakfast paranthas too!

1 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
1 teaspoon turmeric (haldi) powder
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon salt
Method:
1. Heat the oil in a pan, add the cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida, turmeric powder and chillies and saut? for 2 to 3 minutes.
2. Add the sugar, lemon juice and salt and mix well. Allow to cool completely.
3. Serve immediately or store for upto 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator.

The History of Mother's Day

The earliest
Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations
of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.
During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering
Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent. "Mothering Sunday"
honored the mothers of England.
During this time many of England's poor worked as servants for the
wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants
would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the
servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and
spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering
cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to
honor the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and
protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with
the Mothering Sunday celebration . People began honoring their mothers
as well as the church.
In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by
Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the
Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized
Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year.
In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish
a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in
Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second
anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next
year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.
Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers,
businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national
Mother's Day. It was successful, by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in
almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the
official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday
that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day
at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such
as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also
celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.
A Little Mother's Day Trivia:
· In the United States, there are about 82.5 million mothers. (source: US Census Bureau)
· about 96% of American consumers take part in some way in Mother's Day (source: Hallmark)
· Mother's Day is widely reported as the peak day of the year for long distance telephone calls
· Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year for many restaurants
· Retailers report that Mother's Day is the second highest gift-giving holiday in the United States (Christmas is the highest).
· Most popular month for having babies in the US is August, and most popular weekday is Tuesday.

Til Chutney (Sesame-Peanut Chutney)

2 C sesame seeds
½ C peanuts
7 hot dry red chilli peppers (or to taste)
a few garlic cloves (optional)
salt
Roast the peanuts in a pan or in the microwave (2 min). Cool and
skin. Roast the sesame (with the red chillies) in a pan till popping
and aromatic (2 min or so). If using garlic, grind it first in the jar
of your dry grinder. Add the red chillies and blitz till you see
flakes. Add the peanuts and pulse till coarsely powdered. Remove. Pulse
the roasted sesame seeds for just a few seconds – the sesame seeds must
remain mostly whole. Mix everything and season with salt. Store in a
clean dry jar.
I would think it has a shelf life of at least a few weeks but this
quantity lasts just about a week in our house. Go on, get into winter! Happy Holidays!

Orissa Tourism

The landscape of Orissa is dotted with a large number of temples. The temples of Orissa conform to the Indo Aryan Nagara style of architecture, with distinctive features specific to this region. The best known of these are theLingaraja temple at BhubaneshwarJagannath Temple at Puri and theSun  Temple at Konark. The temples of Orissa exhibit a majestic grandeur. An Orissan temple (deul) usually consists of a sanctum, one or several front porches (jagamohana) usually with pyramidal roofs, a dancing hall (nata mandir) and a hall of offerings (bhog mandir).
The Lingaraj temple at Bhubaneswar boasts of a 150 foot high deul while the Jagannath Temple at Puri is about 200 feet high and it dominates the skyline of the town. Only a portion of the Sun Temple at Konark, the largest of the temples of the Golden triangle exists today, and it is still staggering in size. It stands out as a masterpiece in Orissan architecture.
Orissa is also well known as a Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage destination. North-east of Cuttack, about 100 km from Bhubaneswar, there are Buddhist relics and ruins at the three hilltop complexes of Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, which still bear witness to Buddhism's fruitful tryst with this region until well into the 13th century.
Orissa's varying topography – from the wooded Eastern Ghats to the fertile river basin - has proven ideal for evolution of compact and unique ecosystems. Thereby creating such treasure troves of flora and fauna that even seem inviting to many migratory species of birds and reptiles. Bhitar Kanika National Park is famous for its second largest mangrove ecosystem. The bird sanctuary in Chilika (Asia's biggest brackish water lake) and the  tiger reserve and waterfalls in Simlipal National Park are integral part of any eco tours in Orissa, arranged by Tourism of Orissa.
The Gharial Sanctuary at Tikarpada and the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles inGahirmatha turtle sanctuary also feature on the list of avid nature watchers. The city wildlife sanctuaries of Chandaka and Nandan Kananare a must visit for the lessons they teach is conservation and revitalization of species from the brink of extinction.
Orissa is blessed with around 500 km long coastline and has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Chilika, Asia's largest brackish water lake, not only provides a haven for millions of birds, but is also one of the few places in India where one can view dolphins.
The lush green forest cover Of Orissa plays host to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including the famed Royal Bengal Tiger. Amidst the picturesque hills and valleys nestle a number of breathtaking waterfalls and rivulets that attract visitors from all over. Orissa beaches include Puri, Gopalpur-on-Sea, Chandipur, Ramachandi Beach, Balighai Beach, Astarang Beach, Paradeep Beach.

Orissa People & Lifestyle

Ancient
Orissa was a confluence of racial streams. History tells us that the Aryans
entered Orissa from the north-east, subjugated the primitive people living
there and imposed on them their language and culture. The story could not
be so simple; for the people then living in the land were not perhaps all
of the primitive type, nor were they subjugated culturally. What might have
happened in all Probability was a racial and cultural amalgamation.

Geographically Orissa stands as a coastal corridor between the northern and
southern India cut off by the intractable Vindhyas. It is natural therefore
that an assimilation of the races and cultures of the Aryans and the Dravidians;
must have taken place here in the days of gore.
At the same time successive racial and cultural tides might have surged up from
the different sides, rolled in and broken over this Bound culminating in the
indo-cultural synthesis.
Orissa, which is largely rural, the traditional values are still kept alive.
In general the values have no People & Lifestyle, Orissa Tourismdoubt
weakened but they are not lost. Among die innocent Advisees dwelling in the
wooded hinterland and forested hill slopes, India's earliest civilization is
retained in its pristine form.
Not only in their secluded hamlets, bet also in the countless thousands of villages
in the country sides one can catch a glimpse of the dwindling horizon of humanity,
through the innocent and benign outlook of tile villagers.
A sensitive person who happens to be a prisoner of the modern society with its
stress and strain will not, while in a typical village, fail to mark the relationship
of its common people with God, nature and their fellow men.

How To Make Your Computer Faster

Computers are wonderful devices that allow us to do many things but things can get rough once the garbage that comes in through our internet connection begins to stop up our system. I have put together a step-by-step procedure for cleaning all of this out.
Follow the steps below and you will see a noticeable improvement in your system. If you're looking to really speed things up -- like make your computer 2 times faster --
   1. Download Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program, Adaware, and Spybot Search and Destroy. Microsoft's program can be downloaded at Microsoft Windows Defender. Adaware can be downloaded at Lavasoft Downloads. Spybot can be downloaded at The Home of Spybot-S&D. All of these programs are free.
   2. Install Microsoft's anti-spyware program now, but not the other two.
   3. Run MSconfig. To do this, select Start>Run and type msconfig
into the space. Select the Startup tab and get rid of all unnecessary
programs. The way to determine this is to go to ProcessLibrary.com and check it against their database.
   4. Boot into Safe Mode. To do this, restart the computer and press F8
continuously. Select the Safe Mode option from the list and continue to
      desktop.
   5. Delete any spyware programs from your add/remove. To do this,
select Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. Check all
      unknown programs against SpywareGuide.com.
   6. Locate the temp folder in your computer and delete everything in
the folder. This is located, usually, in C:\Documents and
      Settings\Username\local settings.
   7. Still in Safe Mode, install Adaware and Spybot. Run Adaware,
Microsoft's anti-spyware and Spybot. Update to the most recent
definitions in each program and run them in full scan mode. Microsoft's
program cannot be installed in Safe Mode. You have already installed it.
   8. Reboot into standard Windows mode.
   9. Download HijackThis. You can get this program here Merijn.org.
Install and run it. Click Do A System Scan and Save A Logfile.
HijackThis will analyze processes that are running on your computer and
alert you when there are things running that should not be there. It
will also let you know when there are programs running that are not
malicious but can safely be gotten rid of because they are not needed.
  10. Post the logfile in the Automated Log Analyzer at HijackThis.
  11. After determining what's safe and isn't, check appropriate boxes and click Fix Checked.
  12. Run the Microsoft Anti-Malicious program, which you can download at the Microsoft Download Center.
This program is designed by Microsoft to detect and remove programs
whose sole purpose is harming your computer. The technical term for
this type of program is a rootkit.
  13. Download and run BLBeta Expert. This can be downloaded at F-Secure Blacklight.
Make sure to carefully review anything it detects before removing.
BlBeta is another program that is designed to get rid of rootkits.
  14. For Internet Explorer, click Tools> Internet Options>
Security Tab. Click on the Internet Globe icon and select Custom Level.
      Disable the following:
a.       Download Unsigned ActiveX Controls.
b.      Initialize And Script ActiveX Controls Not Marked As Safe.
c.       Active Scripting.
d.      Scripting Of Java Applets.
15.  Also click High Safety under Java Permissions.
16.  If this causes trouble viewing any favorite sites, click the Trusted
Sites icon of the Security Tab and use the Sites button to add the
URL's of sites that are exempt from these requirements. The purpose of
these changes is to tighten the security of your system so that not so
many malicious programs make it to your system.
  17. For Firefox, type about:config in the address bar. Right click in
the window and click New and Integer. In the first box, type
privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins. In the second box, type 2. This
will prevent Flash popups in Firefox.
  18. Open Regedit by clicking Start>Run and type in regedit.
  19. Once Regedit is open, click the plus symbol next to the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder, the plus symbol next to Control Panel, and
then click the Desktop folder icon to display its contents. In the
right pane, double-click MenuShowDelay to change its value. (This
Registry location is referred to as
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL\PANEL\DESKTOP\MENUSHOWDELAY.) The default
Value Data is 400, or 4/10 of a second. Change the Value Data to 0 for
the least delay, and click OK. This will make menus appear instantly on
your computer instead of having a delay.
  20. Open
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\FILESYSTEM.
Right-click Filesystem, select New, and DWORD Value. Rename NewValue#1
      on the right-side pane to DisableNTFSLast-AccessUpdate. Double-click
this new entry, change the Value Data field from 0 to 1, and then click
OK. This disables the constant updating of the dates when a file or
folder were last updated. This will speed up the system.
  21. Open
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\EXPLORER.
Create a new DWORD Value called DesktopProcess, and set its Value Data
      to 1.
  22. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, expand Control Panel, and click Desktop.
Double-click the AutoEndTasks string and change the value to 1. This
causes all of the components of the explorer to run in one process,
      making your computer faster.
23.  There is a caveat for some users here. Do not make this change if
you are not running at least a Pentium processor and 16 MB of physical
memory.
  24.
  25. For Firefox, type about:config in the address bar. Right click in
the window and click New and Integer. In the first box, type
privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins. In the second box, type 2. This
will prevent Flash popups in Firefox.
  26. Open Regedit by clicking Start>Run and type in regedit.
  27. Once Regedit is open, click the plus symbol next to the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder, the plus symbol next to Control Panel, and
then click the Desktop folder icon to display its contents. In the
right pane, double-click MenuShowDelay to change its value. (This
Registry location is referred to as
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL\PANEL\DESKTOP\MENUSHOWDELAY.) The default
Value Data is 400, or 4/10 of a second. Change the Value Data to 0 for
the least delay, and click OK. This will make menus appear instantly on
your computer instead of having a delay.
  28. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\FILESYSTEM. Right-click Filesystem, select New, and DWORD Value. Rename NewValue#1 on the right-side pane to DisableNTFSLast-AccessUpdate. Double-click this new entry, change the Value Data field from 0 to 1, and then click OK. This disables the constant updating of the dates when a file or folder were last updated. This will speed up the system.
  29. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\EXPLORER. Create a new DWORD Value called DesktopProcess, and set its Value Data to 1.
  30. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, expand Control Panel, and click Desktop.
Double-click the AutoEndTasks string and change the value to 1. This
causes all of the components of the explorer to run in one process,
making your computer faster. There is a caveat for some users here. Do not make this change if you are not running at least a Pentium processor and 16 MB of physical memory.
  31. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand SOFTWARE, expand
Microsoft, expand Windows, and expand CurrentVersion. Right-click
Explorer, expand New, click Key, and name the new key AlwaysUnloadDLL.
Click AlwaysUnloadDLL, double-click the Default string, and change the
value to 1. Windows tries to keep some DLL's in memory when the program
uses them. If a user has low memory, this can cause performance issues.
  32. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, expand Control Panel, and click Desktop.
Double-click the HungAppTimeout string and change the value to 1000.
Now, double-click the WaitToKillAppTimeout, string and change the value
to 2000. This sets your system up to more efficiently handle
application hangups. It also will optimize the amount of time a system
takes to close a program when you try to end Windows.
  33. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand System, expand CurrentControlSet, and click Control. Double-click the WaitToKillServiceTimeout string and change the value to 2000. This optimizes the time that it will take for Windows Services to close when the system is set to shut down.
  34. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, expand Control Panel, click Desktop, and
double-click the MenuShowDelay string in the right-hand pane. Change
the value to 100. This will cause Desktop menus to appear almost
      instantly.
  35. Close regedit.
  36. Set Recycle Bin to 1-3 percent of the hard drive space. To do this,
right click on the Recycle Bin. Select properties. Move the slider down
to the desired amount and click Ok. By default, the Recycle bin takes
up too much of your space.
  37. To ensure DMA is in use, click Start, right-click My Computer,
click Properties, select the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager.
Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers entry, double-click the entry for
the channel where your hard drive is installed (most likely the Primary
IDE Channel), and use the Transfer Mode drop-down menu to select DMA If
Available if PIO Only mode is selected. Click Ok, reboot, and recheck
the setting to make sure it sticks. When this is enabled, it will allow
information from your CD/DVD to go straight to memory, bypassing the
system processor and speeding up the system.
You should notice markedly increased speeds in your computer.
Remember that this is not a "do once and forget it" procedure. Crud is
constantly building up in your computer, so make sure and set up a
maintenance plan to keep your computer clean.

Old-Fashioned Household Tips

Troublesome Ants

A
heavy chalk mark laid a finger's distance from your sugar box and all
around (there must be no space not covered) will surely prevent ants
from troubling.

To Drive Off Fleas

Sprinkle about area a few drops of oil of lavender.

To Keep Flies Off Items

Boil three or four onions in a pint of water and apply with a soft brush, let dry.

To Prevent Lost Children

Label children's hats, scarves, etc., with the name and place of residence so that, if lost, they may be easily restored.

To Soften Hard Water

Hard water becomes nearly soft by boiling.
Household Tips

Coal Ashes For Walking On

Make excellent garden walks with coal ashes. They become very hard by use, and no weeds or grass will grow through them.

To Temper Glass

Lamp
chimneys and glassware for hot water are made less liable to break by
putting in cold water, bringing slowly to boiling point, boiling for an
hour, and allowing to cool before removing from the water.

To Start A Fire In Damp, Still Weather

Light
a few bits of shavings or paper placed upon the top of grate; thus by
the heated air's forcing itself into the chimney and establishing there
an upward current, the room is kept free from the gas and smoke which
is so apt to fill it, and the fire can then be lighted from below with
good success.

To Preserve Old Books

Bindings
may be preserved from mildew by brushing them over with spirits of
wine. A few drops of perfumed oil will secure libraries from the
consuming effects of mold and damp. The Romans used oil of cedar to
preserve valuable manuscripts.

To Hang Pictures

The
cheapest and best material with which to hang pictures is copper wire,
of a size proportioned to the weight of the pictures. When hung the
wire is scarcely visible, and its strength and durability is wonderful.
Household Tips

Finish For Room

A
room with plain white walls is finished beautifully by placing a black
walnut (or the same wood with which the room is finished) molding,
around the room where the border of paper is usually placed, at the
junction of wall and ceiling. The molding, finished in oil, is easily
put up. The upper edge should be rounded, and a space of a quarter inch
left between it and the ceiling.
To hang pictures, buy an "S"
hook, sold at all hardware stores, place one hook over the molding,
hang the picture cord on the other, and slip to the right or left to
the desired position. This saves the wall from injury for picture nails.

Laying Carpets

A
carpet wears better if put down well, and it is better to have it done
by experienced persons when the expense can be afforded and such help
can be had.

Stair Carpets

They
will wear much longer if extra thicknesses of paper are placed over the
edge of each stair, the full width of the carpet, before fastening down.

A Cheap Carpet

Make
a cover for the floor of the cheapest cotton cloth. Tack it down like a
carpet, paper it as you would a wall with paper resembling a carpet in
figures, let it dry, varnish with two coats of varnish, and with
reasonable usage it will last two years.
Household Tips

To Soften Corks

When corks are too large to go into a bottle, throw them into hot water a few moments, and they will soften.

To Keep Cutlery From Rust

Wipe dry, and wrap in coarse brown paper.

To Prevent Iron Rust

Kerosine applied to stoves or farming implements, during summer, will prevent their rusting.

To Destroy Cockroaches

The
following is said to be effectual: These vermin are easily destroyed,
simply by cutting up green cucumbers at night, and placing them about
where roaches commit depredations. What is cut from the cucumbers in
preparing them for the table answers the purpose as well, and three
applications will destroy all the roaches in the house. Remove the
peelings in the morning, and renew them at night.

To Banish Rats Or Mice

Sprinkling cayenne pepper in their holes will banish them.
Household Tips

Everlasting Fence Posts

I
discovered many years ago that wood could be made to last longer than
iron in the ground, but thought the process so simple and inexpensive
that it was not worthwhile making any stir about it.
I would as
soon have poplar, basswood, or quaking ash as any other kind of timber
for fence posts. I have taken out basswood posts after having been set
seven years, which were as sound when taken out as when they were first
put in the ground. Time and weather seemed to have no effect on them.
The posts can be prepared for less than two cents a piece [circa 1860].
This
is the recipe: Take boiled linseed oil and stir it in pulverized
charcoal to the consistency of paint. Put a coat of this over the
timber, and there is not a man that will live to see it rotten.

Honey Uses

Honey is good for sore throat; also good for bee stings.

To Treat Neuralgia

For neuralgia nothing is better than a muslin bag filled with hot salt.

For headache

2 or 3 slices of lemon in a cup of strong tea will cure a nervous headache.

For Bilious Headache

A teaspoon full of lemon juice in a small cup of black coffee will relieve a bilious headache.
Household Tips

To Mend A Crack On Inside Of Kitchen Range

Use
a filling made of equal parts of wood ashes and common salt, made up
into paste with a little water, and plastered over the crack. This will
prove hard and lasting whether the stove, etc., be cold or hot.

To Keep Out Red Ants

A small quantity of green sage placed in a pantry will keep out red ants.

To Cure A Burn

Cut open and scrape a raw potato, bind on burn. Repeat if burning sensation returns.

Cure For Hiccoughs

Sit
erect and inflate the lungs fully. Then, retaining the breath, bend
forward slowly until the chest meets the knees. After slowly rising
again to the erect position, slowly exhale the breath. Repeat this
process a second time, and the nerves will be found to have received an
excess of energy that will enable them to perform their natural
functions.

Flowers May Be Kept Very Fresh Overnight

If
they are excluded from the air. To do this, wet them thoroughly, put in
a damp box, and cover with wet newspaper, then place in a cool spot.
Household Tips

To Clean Hands

Tomato juice will remove stains from and whiten the hands.

To Keep Bar Soap

For
this household tip to work with modern soap, you must first remove the
bars of soap from their wrappers and allow them to dry out. Not only do
the dry bars last longer, but they leave less of a soap residue in the
soap dish. This tip works!
It is a great saving to have bars of soap dry. Dry, hard bars will last longer when used. It should be bought by the quantity.

To Soften Hands

Mutton
tallow is considered excellent to soften the hands. It may be rubbed on
at any time when the hands are perfectly dry. Another good rule is to
rub well in dry oatmeal after every washing, and be particular
regarding the quantity of soap. Cheap soap and hard water are the
unknown enemies of many people, and the cause of rough skin and chapped
hands. Castile soap and rain water will sometimes cure without any
other assistance.

To Soften Hands After Soapsuds

One
can have the hands in soapsuds with soft soap without injury to the
skin if the hands are dipped in vinegar or lemon juice immediately
after. The acids destroy the corrosive effects of the alkali, and make
the hands soft and white.

To Soften Hands Where Roughened

Indian
meal and vinegar or lemon juice used on hands where roughened by cold
or labor will heal and soften them. Rub the hands in this, then wash
off thoroughly.
Household Tips

To Prevent Wooden Bedsteads Creaking

If a bedstead creaks at each movement of the sleeper, remove the slats, and wrap the ends of each in old newspapers.

To Prevent The Cracking Of Bottles And Fruit Jars

If
a bottle or fruit jar that has been more than once used is placed on a
towel thoroughly soaked in hot water, there is little danger of its
being cracked by the introduction of a hot liquid.

To Preserve Oil Cloth

If oil cloth be occasionally rubbed with a mixture of beeswax and turpentine, it will last longer.

Packing Glass Bottles

India-rubber bands slipped over them will prevent breakage.

To Remove Putty

A red-hot iron will soften old putty so that it can be easily removed.
Household Tips

To Make Rag Rugs

Cut
rags and sew hit and miss, or fancy-striped as you choose; use wooden
needles, round, smooth, and pointed at one end, of any convenient
length. The knitting is done back and forth, always taking off the
first stitch. --Anna F. Hisey

To Make A Rustic Picture Frame

A
neat, rustic frame for pictures may be made of cattail rods. Hide the
corners where they are joined with handsome autumn leaves and the
berries of bittersweet.

To Make An Ant Trap

Procure
a large natural sponge, wash it well and press it dry, which will leave
the cells quite open; then sprinkle it with fine white sugar, and place
it near where the ants are troublesome. The ants will soon collect upon
the sponge and take up their abode in its cells. It is then only
necessary to dip the sponge in boiling water, when the ants will be
destroyed, and it may be set over and over again.

To send Messages in Cypher

This household tip is great for keeping kids busy playing spies on a rainy day.
Any
document written in cypher, by which signs are substituted for letters,
or even for words, is liable to be deciphered. The following plans are
free from such objection:
The correspondents select two copies
of the same edition of a book, the word to be used is designated by
figures referring to the page, line, and number of the word in the line.
Or,
the message may be written on a slip of paper wound spirally around a
rod of wood; these can only be deciphered by bringing them into their
original position, by wrapping around a second rod of the same size.
Household Tips

Castor Oil as a Dressing for Leather

Castor
oil, besides being an excellent dressing for leather, renders it
vermin-proof; it should be mixed, say half and half, with tallow or
other oil. Neither rats, roaches, nor other vermin will attack leather
so prepared.

Substitute for a Corkscrew

This old household tip might come in handy sometime when you find yourself without a corkscrew.
A
convenient substitute for a corkscrew, when the latter is not at hand,
may be found in the use of a common wood screw, with an attached string
to pull the cork.
Another: Stick two forks vertically into the
cork on opposite sides, not too near the edge. Run the blade of a knife
through the two, and give a twist.
Another: Fill the hollow at
the bottom of the bottle with a handkerchief or towel; grasp the neck
with one hand, and strike firmly and steadily with the other upon the
handkerchief.

To Keep Up Sash Windows

This
is performed by means of cork, in the simplest manner, and with
scarcely any expense. Bore 3 or 4 holes in the sides of the sash, into
which insert common bottle cork, projecting about the sixteenth part of
an inch. These will press against the window frames along the usual
groove, and by their elasticity support the sash at any height which
may be required.

To Repel Moths

Instead
of moth balls, try using dried lavender blossoms, dried mint leaves, or
cedar shavings (the kind available as pet bedding works well). The
odors of these natural materials are pleasant, yet they repel moths,
and there are no dangers involved as with moth balls.
Moth balls
are poisonous and are considered a pesticide. Avoid inhaling moth ball
fumes and do not use them around young children and pets.

Old-Fashioned White Wash Recipe

7-1/2
lbs unslaked lime, 1-1/2 lbs rock salt, 3/4 lbs cement. Dissolve salt
in 1 gallon of cold water. Pour the salt solution on the lime. Next add
1-1/2 gallons of water to the lime slowly allowing it to slake (it will
get very hot). Finally, sprinkle the cement on a little at a time and
stir mixture thoroughly. Be sure to apply this wash while it is still
hot.
The white wash will take about 2 days to harden, but after
it hardens it will withstand almost any amount of rain or washing.
Warning: Do not spill this mixture on your skin or clothing. It gets
very hot, and lime will burn.
Household Tips

For A Flower Bowl

Cut
a piece of stiff paper the shape and size of the top of an ordinary
bowl. Cut holes in it, as many as desired, for the stems of real or
artificial flowers. Fit paper in bowl and put flower stems through
holes.

To Make Rice Glue

Mix
rice flour smoothly with cold water, and simmer it over a slow fire,
when it will form a delicate and durable cement, not only answering all
the purposes of common paste, but well adapted for joining paper and
card board ornamental work. Rice glue is excellent for use in
scrapbooks.

Economy In Carpets

In
buying a carpet, as in everything else, those of the best quality are
cheapest in the end. As it is extremely desirable that they should look
as clean as possible, avoid buying a carpet that has any white in it.
Even a small portion of white interspersed through the pattern will in
a short time give it a dingy appearance.
If you cannot obtain a
hearth rug that exactly corresponds with the carpet, get one entirely
different, for a decided contrast looks better than a bad match.
